About Forest Park
Bruin Bands
The Forest Park Bruin Bands is a fourteen-time Virginia Honor Band program!
The Bruin Bands proudly represent Forest Park High School and are the center of the school’s band curriculum. Those participating in the Bruin Bands grow as musicians, students, and citizens.
The Forest Park Bruin Bands program offers a wide variety of curricular and extracurricular performing groups. These groups include Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Percussion Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, the Marching Bruin Band, the Bruin Big Band, the Forest Park Winter Guard, and Symphony Orchestra.
The Bruin Bands Boosters are our parent support group, and help the band director provide quality experiences to all band students at Forest Park High School. Their presence is a constant at all band performances including concerts, festivals, football games, competitions, parades, and other community performances.
The Forest Park High School Bruin Bands Boosters is an independent organization which has obtained the approval of PWCS to support its schools, students, teams, programs, and extracurricular activities. All funds raised by the Forest Park High School Bruin Bands Boosters will be used for approved school purposes.

About Director of Bands
Mr. Nicholas Ro
Mr. Ro is entering his third year as band director at Forest Park High School. He began his journey in band in sixth grade where he began playing alto and baritone saxophone at Woodbridge Middle School. He began taking lessons at the local Music and Arts store, and eventually enrolled at Woodbridge Senior High School as a student of the Center for Fine and Performing Arts. While at Woodbridge, Mr. Ro participated in various musical ensembles including concert bands, marching band, symphony orchestra performances, musical pit orchestra, and was a charter member of the Woodbridge Indoor Drumline.
After high School, Mr. Ro attended Christopher Newport University, where he earned a Bachelor of Music majoring in Music Education and Saxophone Performance, and a Master of Arts in Teaching focusing on Instrumental Music Education. While at CNU, he performed with many ensembles on campus including Wind Ensemble, University Band, Saxophone Quartets and Quintets, Percussion Ensemble, Pep Band, and the Marching Captains. He also worked very closely with many composers on campus and helped premier new music almost every semester while at CNU.
During his time at CNU, Mr. Ro also sought performance opportunities off campus. He was able to further explore his passion for the marching arts by earning a spot playing bass drum for Forza East Independent Percussion, a now defunct open-class indoor drumline that competed in the Winter Guard International (WGI) competitive circuit. After that season, Mr. Ro would take the next indoor season off to return to his alma mater and join the staff at the Woodbridge Indoor Drumline. During the summer of 2015, he joined the Bushwackers Drum and Bugle Corps, a senior corps competing in the Drum Corps Associates (now DCI All-Age) competitive circuit. Mr. Ro made his return to the WGI scene in 2016 when he earned a spot playing bass drum for the George Mason University Indoor Drumline. He went back to GMU for his age-out season in 2017, ending his marching career. Mr. Ro also had the good fortune to work as a park musician at Busch Gardens Williamsburg. He played tenor sax, flute, and clarinet in the 2014 production of “Deck the Halls” during Christmas Town, and played baritone sax in the 2016 revival of “The Starfright Orchestra” during Howl-O-Scream.
After graduating from CNU in 2017, Mr. Ro returned home to Woodbridge and began working at John Adams Elementary School in Alexandria, Virginia. While at John Adams, Mr. Ro taught general music to Preschool through Fifth Grade, and directed the John Adams Orchestra program. He was also on the educational staff for ASO Sympatico directing the Xylokids, a youth ensemble that met every morning before school that learned music using elementary Orff xylophones. Mr. Ro would also assume his role as Drumline Coordinator at Forest Park High School, a position he would remain in until his most recent appointment as the school’s band director.
Since aging out of the marching arts activities, Mr. Ro has kept busy as an instructor and designer for a variety of programs at varying levels. He has served as a staff member for the Woodbridge High School Indoor Drumline, the Liberty University Indoor Drumline, Jersey Surf Drum and Bugle Corps, Empyrean Percussion, and is currently on staff with Spectre Percussion.
When not teaching, Mr. Ro can often be found arranging music or writing drill for various schools and ensembles, playing video games, and spending time with his wife Maddie and pet guinea pigs Winnie and Stella. He is very excited to make music with you!
Color Guard
The Forest Park High School Color Guard is an integral part of the Forest Park Bruins Marching Band. The color guard performs at home football games, competitions, and travels to parades and competitions. They use flags, rifles, sabers, and dance to enhance the marching band's music.
The Winter Guard is an additional performance opportunity for students interested in color guard. The ensemble holds auditions shortly after the conclusion of the marching band season, and follows their own rehearsal and performance schedule from November-April. The group competes in the Atlantic Indoor Association and Winter Guard International competitive circuits and performs at schools and arenas across Virginia.
The Color Guard and Winter Guard are under the direction of Ms. Connor Lynn Gaffney.
Prior experience in color guard is not necessary, and everyone is welcome to try out!
Concert and Jazz Bands
Wind Ensemble
The Wind Ensemble is the top performing ensemble in the Forest Park band program. The Wind Ensemble accepts students grades 10-12, but will rarely accept an outstanding 9th grade students based on audition. This class performs in numerous concerts and community outreach events throughout the year, and has the greatest expectation for additional after-school rehearsals and performances. This ensemble also determines Forest Park’s status as a Virginia Honor Band.
Symphonic Band
The Symphonic Band is for woodwind and brass students in grades 10-12. This course focuses on developing skills and musicianship to elevate students into the Wind Ensemble. This class performs in up to four concerts during the year, and has very few after school commitments (after school dress rehearsals and evening concerts).
Concert Band
The Concert Band is for entering freshmen woodwind and brass students. This course focuses on building skills that are already being developed in middle school. The goal of these classes is to prepare students to advance in the band program at Forest Park. This class performs in up to four concerts during the year, and has very few after school commitments (after school dress rehearsals and evening concerts).
Percussion Ensemble
The Percussion Ensemble is for all percussionists in grades 9-12. This course focuses on developing skills specific to percussion and students prepare music specifically written for percussion ensembles. This class also serves as the percussion section for Concert and Symphonic Band. This class performs in up to four concerts during the year, and has very few after school commitments (after school dress rehearsals and evening concerts).
Bruin Big Band
The Bruin Big Band is Forest Park High School’s Jazz Band. The Big Band meets after school in the spring semester and explores a variety of different styles of jazz music. Students in grades 9-12 are welcome to join the Big Band. All instruments are welcome, but there is a special need for saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and rhythm section (guitar, bass, piano, drums). This group meets once or twice a week after school and performs in up to two performances each year.

Indoor Drumline
Forest Park Combined Indoor Drumline
Established for the 2024 season, the Forest Park Combined Indoor Drumline (FPC) is a competitive indoor percussion ensemble that competes in the Percussion Scholastic A class in the Atlantic Indoor Association and Winter Guard International circuits. Presently, FPC is the only competitive indoor drumline in Prince William County and membership is open to all PWCS students who complete our audition process.
What is an Indoor Drumline?
An indoor drumline is a competitive marching music ensemble similar to a marching band. Instead of performing and competing on a football field in the summer/fall, indoor drumlines perform in basketball gyms/arenas in the winter/spring. They often use vinyl tarps/floors, props, and custom uniforms designed to help enhance the show design.
There are generally two sections of an indoor drumline: the battery on the floor, and the front ensemble. In some cases, groups will utilize a visual ensemble or instrumental soloists to enhance their program.
